Google Gemini API Key

Your AI agent's brain and voice run on Google Gemini. ExoCall requires every account to bring its own Gemini API key — creating one takes about two minutes and starts on Google's free tier.

Create the key

  1. 1

    Open Google AI Studio

Go to aistudio.google.com and sign in with any Google account (a normal Gmail works). Use the account you want Google-side usage billed to if you later enable billing.

  2. 2

    Create an API key

Click Get API key → Create API key. Google generates a key starting with AIza. Copy it immediately and store it somewhere safe — treat it like a password.

  3. 3

    Paste it into ExoCall

In ExoCall → Settings → Google Gemini API Key, paste the key and click Save. That's it — your agent can now speak on calls and analyse them afterwards.

  4. 4

Recommended: enable billing for production volumes

The free tier is fine for testing, but live voice calls consume tokens quickly. In Google AI Studio, link the key's project to a billing account so real campaigns aren't rate-limited mid-call. Google's usage dashboard shows exactly what you spend.

This key is required — not optional

Without a valid Gemini key, inbound calls are answered and immediately ended, and campaign calls fail silently. If your calls end within seconds with no transcript, check this key first.

What the key powers

Live conversation — Gemini Live listens and speaks in real time in 12 Indian languages, switching language automatically to match the caller.

Post-call analysis — after each call, Gemini analyses the recording (or transcript) to produce the lead label, score, summary, call outcome, next action, and the rest of your call insights.

Common questions

Is the Gemini API key free?

Google AI Studio issues keys with a free tier. Live voice calls consume the Gemini Live API, which beyond the free tier is billed by Google to your Google account — ExoCall never charges for it and never sees your Google billing. For production call volumes, enable billing on the Google Cloud project behind your key so calls are not throttled.

Why does ExoCall need my own Gemini key instead of providing one?

Each business brings its own key so your call audio flows directly between Exotel, ExoCall, and your own Google account — and your volume is never queued behind other customers. There is no platform-shared key: without your key, the AI cannot join calls.

What happens if my Gemini key is missing or invalid?

Calls will connect to Exotel but the AI cannot speak, so ExoCall ends the call and logs an AI error. In the dashboard this looks like calls that end within a few seconds with no transcript. Fix: paste a valid key in Settings → Google Gemini API Key and save.

Is my API key stored securely?

The key is stored against your account and used only server-side to connect your calls to Gemini and run post-call analysis. It is masked in the Settings UI. You can rotate it any time by creating a new key in Google AI Studio and pasting it over the old one.
